How to Choose a Television

Nowadays there are 4 types of televisions: tube, plasma, LCD and projecting ones. Every type has its advantages and disadvantages.

Tube TV sets

Low price provides a wide contribution of tube televisions. Televisions with convex screens are less popular, especially among cine amateurs, though they are cheaper. Flat screens cost more, but they look beautiful. The disadvantage of tube television is screen flicker. Though there are 100-hertz screens as well as 50-hertz, after watching such television for a long time, you may notice eye tiredness. Few more visible minuses are the influence of magnetic fields on the image and large size. Also you won’t find such television larger then 30-inch. But their reliability and long term of use are still important for buyers. Besides, you can find a big variety of such televisions.

Plasma televisions

The main advantages of plasma televisions are thin body and large screen, which allow placing them wherever you wish. The work of this television is based on the principle, that every screen dot is an individual shining element. The pluses of technical characteristics are the absence of flickering and harmful radiation. The screen has a good observability and doesn’t collect dust. All plasma televisions are equipped with a digital input for computer interconnection and work about 17 years. Unfortunately, this technology has its disadvantages. With time every screen dot looses its brightness, and may even be disabled, especially in the places where there is always an image (for example, company logo). And all this is preceded by big energy consumption, noisy work (because of the fens in cooling system) and high price.

LCD televisions

LCD television is made of two transparent panels and a layer of liquid crystals between them. The image is not flicking because unlike tube televisions, the image is brought out not by lines, but the whole at once. But LCD televisions don’t have the necessary observability. Though, technical characteristics state under 170 degrees, the image quality is lost from big viewing angles. And still there is a problem of reaction time. If images change quickly, then the picture will blur. The size of such televisions can gain 40 inches, but the price grows according to the size. Low energy consumption and perfect image geometry are the advantages of these televisions. Besides they don’t create electromagnetic waves and don’t “fade”. That’s why they can be used as computer displays.

Projecting televisions

The popularity of projecting televisions has grown because of their quality and big sizes.
By the image rendering type such kinds are distinguished: cathode ray tube (CRT), LCD and digital light processing (DLP).

Cathode ray tube projecting televisions

This type of televisions is usually represented as floor devices. In the bottom part there are projecting tubes, acoustic systems and electronics, and the top is a screen itself. The main characteristic is frequency – 50 and 100 hertz – which influences the image quality. The problem of such projecting televisions is “fading” of screen sections, it disables the television. And the change of the screen is too expensive. But if you are ready to pay such price for the qualitative image with natural colors and in a large size, then it’s your choice.

LCD projecting televisions

The advantage of these projecting televisions is the absence of flickering, compactness and considerably low price. They have a large bright screen with high resolution. But there are problems with natural color rendering, observablity and image blurring. There is also a problem with cooling: noisy fens can be heard in quiet room.

Digital light processing (DLP) televisions

The popularity of digital light processing televisions is just. They attract customers because of the good contrast, dearness without blur, precise color rendering and brightness. The main disadvantage is the term of life (under few thousand hours) and noisy cooling system. The repair may cost you a fortune.
Common for all projecting televisions features are quite impressive. First, they have a qualitative sound with a high launch power. Some models even have built-in subwoofers and volume sound systems. Elite models also have built-in home theater processor and back acoustic systems.
If you have decided what television to buy, you still have to choose a proper one by its technical characteristics, represented by different producers.
