Television Choice

Despite television type (projecting or usual tube) television should correspond to your requirements to its technical characteristics.

Screen size

Television screen size or, in other words, the size of its diagonal is measured in two magnitudes – centimeters or inches (it is usually shown in the naming of the model). Depending on the size, you should choose the distance from which it is better to watch TV. If you want to reduce flickering, then the distance should be about 5 times bigger then diagonal. For 100 hertz televisions the distance of 3 diagonals is acceptable. If you are a real cine amateur, then the screen will be very important for you. Convex screen is cheaper, but a flat one looks more fashionable and the image is better; sun and other sources of light won’t impede.

Color (broadcasting) systems PAL, SECAM, NTSC

NTSC color system is used in North America, Japan and in the main part of Asia; PAL color system is used in Europe, Middle East, Australia and New Zealand; SECAM is popular in France, CIS and some other Western European countries.
Nowadays televisions can use several standards, but you’ll need only PAL/SECAM. It is unlikely that you’ll need NTSC color system.

Picture frequency (analyzing)

Picture frequency is called analyzing and is measured in hertz. 50 hertz analyzing is considered to be standard for tube televisions. But there are models with 100 hertz analyzing. The advantage of such televisions is high picture frequency, which leads to less eye weariness. It is especially convenient, when you watch film with subtitles or connect to the computer. The disadvantage of this technology is “blurring” of frequently changing image. And the difference in price is still very big!

Sound format

Qualitative sound is not of the least importance. You can’t expect a good sound from small TV sets because of a small distance between speakers. So televisions under 54 cm can have mono sound. Notice that the television body shouldn’t rattle on high volume. It would be better if speakers were more powerful, then they could give more qualitative sound on the lower volume level. If you are going to watch only TV programs, then you don’t have to pay for stereo sound, because the most channels work in mono function. And if you are going to use television in a wider functions (video recorder, satellite television), then you should have stereo sound. Stereo sound reception is provided with NICAM-decoder. You can also choose a television with Dolby Digital system, then you’ll be able to collect the whole home theater, connecting DVD-player and sound system. But it is better to take the sound from the player.

Menu and remote control

Television menu should be clear and easy, written on your language. It can be even symbolic, but you will get used to it as soon as you understand it. It is important that menu has all necessary image, sound and signal recept settings.
Remote control shouldn’t be very big and should be well balanced in your hand. It is convenient if buttons are stiff but accurate. It is advisable that they are convex, so that you can find them in darkness.

Television connection and inputs

If you want to connect television to any other additional device, then you should check the availability of proper inputs.
S-Video standard was created for video recorders and video cameras. So if you are a happy owner of such devices, then make sure that there is such input.
Another connection standard is RCA audio/video. It is used with video recorder, video camera, DVD-player and other devices. If it’s a stereo sound television, then there are 2 sound inputs; mono sound will have one input. Television may have only one audio RCA input, for example, for stereo system.
SCART – is a universal input, which is used for two way connection.
VGA-input is used for PC connection, but televisions are not intended for continuous uninterrupted work, that’s why they can’t replace the monitor.
Don’t forget to tune up all the inputs after installation, which is described in directory, otherwise the system won’t work.
The location of inputs is also very important. For example, for DVD-player, which will be permanently connected, the inputs should be on the back side, and for video camera or game-device the inputs should be on the front or flank side.
Your television should unite good functionality and comfort use! Make a good choice!
