Selecting a Smartphone

Not long ago pocket PC, built in the mobile, was associated with a giant inconvenient device. But recently with a development of new technologies, appeared a new convenient and easy device called smartphone. Their popularity grows every day. Nowadays smartphones are more popular then pocket PC. Specialists claim that in future smartphones will completely replace usual mobiles.

What is a smartphone and what can it do?

Besides calling and sending messages, you can use it as a calendar, address book, audio and video player, a facility for sending e-mails and using internet, Word and Excel documents editor. Besides, you can install different programs, which allows to make your smartphone original and functional. For example, you can change the look and the work of menu or address book, use your smartphone as a calories counter or remote control for your DVD-player. Everything is very easy, you just have to download a necessary program from the internet.

Where to begin?

First of all, you should pay attention on the processor and memory. The higher is the processor frequency and the larger is the memory – the higher are the computing facilities, and the faster is the work. If you are buying a smartphone in the shop and can’t find its technical characteristics, you should be worried about it. Consult with a shop-assistant or test the phone in the shop. To test the smartphone you should start an MP3 player and a program for office documents or photos at the same time. It is the most frequent combination of simultaneously working programs. If a smartphone doesn’t work good, it doesn’t deserve your attention.

Then you should pay attention on the operating system. The choice is not big: either Symbian OS, or OS Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition. Majority of smartphones works with these two competing systems. They are almost identical, except for one difference. Symbian OS was created especially for mobiles and its interface is easy and clear, all the settings are visible. OS Windows Mobile is more complicated, because it came from the world of PCs at first to the pocket PC and only then to the smartphones.

That’s why our advice is very simple: If you don’t want to spend a lot of time adjusting settings, choose Symbian OS. And if you have already used pocket PC with Windows and got used to its interface, then Windows Smartphone — is your choice!

The next detail on which you should pay attention is a display. You should decide how you are going to use a smartphone, before selecting a display. Large display with 320 õ 240 resolution and few thousands of colors renders the graphic better and allows to look through WEB sites more comfortably. But at the same time it consumes more energy and discharges the accumulator sooner. That’s why if you are going to look through photos and Internet pages, read books and play 3D games, you need exactly this display. If you are not interested in all these, you can choose a smaller display.

Information input. Information input device is the most important facility in any smartphone, because it is created for the work with information. There are three main methods of information input: touch display, full QWERTY – keyboard and small phone keyboard.

• If you are going to type a lot, then we recommend you to choose a smartphone with QWERTY – keyboard. It has large convenient keys.
• Touch screen is not used for a lot of typing, but it is universal. You can look through the menu, type with a help of virtual keyboard or even draw letters on the screen. Sometimes these two ways of information input are combined.
• Smartphones with inconvenient phone keyboard are the most compact that is their advantage.

And of course, don’t forget that the smartphone is first of all a phone, a communication facility. Smartphone should find and maintain the network, even in the uncertain reception zone and in the places with many people. GSM-blocks of smartphone and of usual mobile are particularly the same. That’s why from the communicational point of view, smartphones are chosen according to the same principles as in the mobile.
